What is the greenhouse effect?

Greenhouse effect refers to the process whereby radiation from the atmosphere of the planet warms the planet’s surface to a temperature above that which would prevail in the absence of that atmosphere.

To simplify, here is the step-by-step process of the greenhouse effect.

1: Some of the solar radiation hit the Earth’s atmosphere

2: The rest is absorbed by the land and the oceans, which heat up the Earth

2: The heat from the Earth radiates then towards the space

3: Some of this heat is trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, keeping the Earth warm enough to sustain life

4: Through human activities such as burning fossil fuels and land clearing extra heat is produced which causes the Earth’s temperature to increase
